One More Round

©Tom Eslick 1996

He came in from the country
To a town he'd never seen
At Kensington
He walked in
To a pub near Brook Green
And he orders a pint of bitter
And thinks of the day gone by
And the memory of all
He did recall
Made a London lullaby

So he orders up another
Though a pint costs him over a pound
"It's getting harder these days,"
The barkeep says
"For a lad to buy a round
And I don't know where it will lead us
But I know it must end sometime
It takes half a quid
To do what I did
For a tuppence in '59."
Cho.

And it's one more round for London town
Two more for the road
And with luck my friends
He'll be back again
With one more round to go

He remembers Piccadilly
And the rockers in Leicester Square
Spending lost nights
Under Soho lights
Without a dime to spare
And he thinks of all of the history
In the bones lying under his feet
How some where inbred
And some lost their head
As they danced to the royalty beat

Cho.

Then time is called, the pub is closed
And he wanders down the street
As the mist rolls in
He thinks again
Of the memories that he'll keep
Then it's off to Heathrow in the morning
For a flight at 9:00 A.M.
But he's counting the days
'Til he makes his way
To London town again.
