Yardsale Wedding Gown
©Tom Eslick 1996
She sits in a lawn chair in front of her trailer
Watching the traffic go by
Her ex's nail apron is full of loose change
She has a used car salesman's eye
There's a toaster oven that's missing a hinge
But it still browns your muffins real fine
Won't you make her an offer she's ready to deal
For it's final close-out time
And floating above on a clothes line
A wedding gown catches the wind
And it seems to wear a gossamer smile
A silent Lohengrin
The waist is tiny and the hem is frayed
But it's only been worn once before
If you play your cards right
It could be yours tonight
'Cause it just doesn't fit anymore
Cho:
Yes, who will buy
This bargain diaphanous hand me down
Who will buy
This yardsale wedding gown?
I test the buttons and finger the lace
And she smiles and comes to my side
I can see now her belly is swollen with child
Her ex's final reply
And she asks me if I have a sweetheart
I'd like to march down the aisle
This classic design
Will serve her just fine
It'll never go out of style
Cho:
I tell her that I am just looking
And currently living alone
For a moment she seems to be checking me out
As a possible heir to the throne
But her interest quickly fades away
As she heads back for her chair
Her heart isn't well
It's a dress that won't sell
And will take some time to repair
